What is the name of this movie, it has been driving me nuts for 20 years?

The plot goes something like this, there is a man who is walking down the street in maybe new york and is upscale well to do, and hates to be bothered by annoying beggars and low lifes, and then turns down an ally and manages to get into abit of a pickle and falls underground or becomes dirty, looses his briefcase, wallet, and looks very grimey, possibly injured, somehow surfaces and asks for help, then is turned away by other well to do busy body and coming full circle while getting a taste of his own medicine, and a huge dose of irony. Please I am desperatly asking for your help.
